Defense Overview

Defense Overview

Why Tonokori Castle (Miyakonojo Castle) was hard to attack

This castle is hard to attack because it combines a raised core with defended outer space with enough defensive depth to slow attackers before the center.

An attacker would not get a simple direct approach to the center. They would have to cross water barriers or moat lines, push through successive outer areas before the core, and do so under a position that also watches the surrounding routes.

How this estimate was built+

This estimate combines broad terrain, approach, layout, and route-control signals. It is meant to explain the castle's defensive logic in plain English, not reconstruct a single historical attack.

Terrain Advantage

How much the terrain itself seems to help: height, slope, ridges, cliffs, water edges, and limited approach directions.

15/20

Entrance Defense

How awkward and dangerous the first entry looks: gates, bridge or moat crossings, chokepoints, and forced turns.

14/20

Internal Complexity

How hard it seems to keep pushing after entry: layered baileys, depth, compartmentalization, and repeated defensive lines.

16/20

Siege Endurance

A rough sense of long-hold potential: moats, water access, space, storage plausibility, and defensive staying power.

15/20

Strategic Oversight

How much the castle appears to command nearby roads, plains, rivers, basins, harbors, or town approaches.

Why Visit

Tonokori Castle is for dedicated Sengoku history visitors interested in the Ito-Shimazu struggle for southern Kyushu. Combine with Obi Castle (the most beautifully preserved castle town in Miyazaki) for a full southern Miyazaki itinerary.

Highlights

1

The Ito-Shimazu Battlefield — The Contest for Southern Kyushu

Tonokori Castle was the center of the prolonged power struggle between the Ito clan of Hyuga Province (Miyazaki) and the Shimazu clan of Satsuma (Kagoshima) for control of southern Kyushu. The castle changed hands multiple times between these two great southern Kyushu powers throughout the Sengoku period.

2

Ito Yoshisuke's Last Stand — The 'Hyuga Collapse'

In 1578, the Ito clan's collapse against the Shimazu — known as the 'Hyuga Collapse' (Hyuga Kuzure) — saw the Ito lord Yoshisuke flee his domain completely, seeking refuge with Otomo Sorin of Bungo (Oita). Tonokori Castle fell to the Shimazu as part of this collapse.

3

Shiroyama Park — Views of the Kirishima Volcanoes

Now a public park on the low hill above central Miyakonojo city, Tonokori Castle's ruins are a pleasant green space with views over the Kirishima volcanic landscape to the south. Miyakonojo is the largest city in Miyazaki Prefecture by area and the gateway to the Kirishima volcanic highlands.

Structure Details

Visitor tip

The ruins are modest — the castle's historical significance exceeds its visual remains. Visit for the Ito-Shimazu historical context and the views of the Kirishima volcanic landscape.

Castle type

Hill castle

Hill-top flatland castle (built on a low hill above the Miyakonojo basin, overlooking the Kirishima volcanic highlands to the south)

Layout type

Linked compound layout

Compound style — multiple compounds on the castle hill with moats

Main tower

No tenshu or stone walls survive — the castle was an earthwork construction of the Sengoku period.

Stone walls

Earthen walls

The castle was built of earthen embankments and wooden palisades. The low hill preserves the overall compound topography.

Moats

Dry moats supplemented the natural hill terrain on the approach sides.

Key defensive features

Hill Position — Miyakonojo Basin Observation

The castle's low hill position gave commanding observation of the surrounding Miyakonojo basin — one of the most productive agricultural areas of southern Kyushu.

Kirishima Highland Control

The castle also controlled the routes between the Miyakonojo basin and the Kirishima volcanic highlands.
